Westport welcomes the first Cycle Against Suicide SpinOff of 2016

Westport SpinOff 2016

On Saturday February 20th the first Cycle Against Suicide SpinOff of 2016 is coming to Westport and the organizers want you to get involved. This event is locally run and owned by the Westport and Louisburgh communities, and will have all the colour, fun and energy of the annual cycle. All are welcome to get involved in whatever way possible.

Starting at 11 from Rice College the SpinOff will make its way to Louisburgh allowing cyclists to take in the stunning natural beauty of the area, with Croagh Patrick to the east, and the Atlantic to the west. In Sancta Maria College entertainment, refreshments and a mental health awareness event will be held, reiterating the message that “it’s ok not to feel ok; and it’s absolutely ok to ask for help”. The cycle will then return to Rice College for yet another warm welcome back to Westport.

The 45km route is the perfect opportunity to support this great cause, in what promises to be an incredibly uplifting and positive event. You don’t have to be an avid cyclist to take part as all levels are catered for. If you would prefer to volunteer rather than cycle then the Westport SpinOff Committee are looking for supporters and volunteers in advance of the cycle as well as on the day of the event.

Westport businesses and the local community are encouraged to "Show Some Orange" for the day to spread the message and support the cause.

Cycle Against Suicide is an all-Ireland charity, which seeks to break the stigma associated with the open discussion of mental health, through the promotion of its message that 'it's ok not to feel ok; and it's absolutely ok to ask for help'. Over 800 people die from suicide in Ireland each year and Cycle Against Suicide prompts a conversation about mental health in schools, businesses and communities throughout Ireland and encourages those in need, to seek out the supports available.

Each year, Cycle Against Suicide brings together cyclists of all abilities with many different stories and many different “whys” for participating in part of, or all of, the two week cycle event, but each and every one is united, in their desire to demonstrate, that shoulder to shoulder, they can break the cycle of suicide in Ireland. The annual cycling event has seen over 10,000 cyclists take to the roads of Ireland in April and May each year, to spread the message that “it’s ok not to feel ok; and absolutely ok to ask for help”. The charity also has an extensive schools programme where we engage with students throughout the year. This January 14th students from three Mayo schools, Balla Secondary School, St. Josephs College and St Geralds College attended our annual day long Students Leaders Congress, an event which saw 4,200 students converge in the RDS to highlight the importance of promoting positive mental health practices in schools and communities, as well as demonstrating to students the value of appreciating their own mental wellbeing.

If you would like to play your part in breaking the cycle of suicide in Ireland, we would love to hear from you! From cycling to supporting, all are welcome in Westport on February 20th, and every small piece of participation helps to spread awareness.

Registration for the SpinOff is now open online.

Registration on the day will be at Rice College, Castlebar Road from 08:30-10:00AM.

Cost is 30 euro for non cycling Ireland members, 10 euro if you are. This charge is solely for insurance.
