Westport Food Festival - September 4th-6th

Check out the lineup of events at this year's Westport Food Festival which takes place from Friday September 4th to Sunday September 6th.

Jump on your bike, hop in a kayak or take to the streets on shank's mare - every one of them is part of a Westport Food Festival event between 4th and 6th September 2015. It's totally in keeping with Westport's proud status as a designated Smarter Travel area. It's also a lot of fun for anyone who loves local food.

NEW - Kayaking Tour with Gourmet Picnic
Take to the high seas for a sea kayaking trip to remember. Experienced guides will take you out on the sheltered waters of Clew Bay for a stunning scenic tour of the Wild Atlantic Way from the other side. Watch out for dolphins, seal colonies and all sorts of sea birds. To cap it all you'll stop off one on of the many islands for a gourmet picnic feast sourced from the best local producers. Traditional bush craft cooking techniques are used - and guests are invited to get involved themselves if they're the hands on type.

Reservations are essential as the group size is strictly limited to 12 people. All equipment is provided and no previous experience or swimming ability is needed. The tour takes place on Sunday 6th September at 11am and costs €60 per person. Booking is through Travis Zeray of Clew Bay Bikes on 098 24818 or 098 37675.

Foody Tours
Walking is one of the transport forms used by Foody Tours, a guided tour of five hand-picked Westport culinary destinations. Venues are only revealed on the night adding to the entertainment. Over 4 hours you will sample some of Westport’s best chefs’ signature dishes, the finest local produce and delicious wine, craft beer and cocktails. Guests will also get to meet some of the characters behind the food – chefs, managers and producers – and of course mingle with their fellow foodies as they travel the culinary trail.

Over the past three years Foody Tours, have become a stalwart of Westport Food Festival and have a very loyal following as fonder Siobhan Foody explains, "Since becoming involved with the festival we’ve had people extend their holidays, do business together, come back every year with their family and friends in tow and, of course, have some late, great nights on tour! Tourists find it gives them great local foodie knowledge and locals might try something they wouldn’t normally order."

This year Westport Food Festival is offering three Foody Tours. One on Friday at 5pm and two on Saturday, both starting at 5pm. Groups are strictly limited to 12 so advance booking is essential. The cost is €40 (€60 with drinks) and booking is with Siobhan Foody (087 1203297).

Bike Buffet
The Bike Buffet is another much loved part of Westport Food Festival and takes the format of a travelling dinner. There's a mocktail at the meeting venue, then at the ring of Laura Heneghan's signature bicycle bell everyone pours out the door and onto their bikes. The brightly coloured group, sporting every imaginable shade of hi vis vest, takes off through the streets of Westport to their next venue where the starter will be served and so on until dessert. It's a fantastic format, it's suitable for everyone in the family and it's a lot of fun. Bike hire is available for visitors or anyone who doesn't have their own wheels.

The Bike Buffet is part of the Westport Smarter Travel initiative. It costs €20 per person and takes place at 6.30pm on Friday 4th September. Advance booking is essential and is through Westport Leisure Park (098 29160).

Lords & Ladles at Westport House
The Lords & Ladles Tour is a brand new tour based on the RTE television series of the same name. It's an introduction to the 'below stairs' section of a stately home. The cost is €15 which includes light refreshments afterwards. Lords & Ladles Tours are at 11am and 3pm on both Saturday and Sunday. Booking is through Westport House (098 27766).
