The Westport Town of Tomorrow Urban Design Competition 2013

Westport, the first town in Ireland to have been modelled in 3D and hosted on Google Earth is launching its sixth Town of Tomorrow Urban Design Competition for students.

Since its inception in 2008 hundreds of students have taken part in this innovative competition sponsored by Westport Town Council, The Mayo News and actively supported by Google.

This year sees the expansion of the competition to take in students from any school in Mayo. Plus we have decided to reduce the time period with registration taking place from now with the closing date for entries being April 12th.

Students and or Teachers can register via email to bphafferty@anu.ie plus they will be able to register via our new web site www.townoftomorrow.org in a few weeks.

The competition, which once again be judged by expert 3D modellers from the USA, involves the re-design of the centre of ‘virtual’ Westport using the popular architectural software Trimble SketchUp.

The competition is based on the ground-breaking photo-realistic 3D computer model of Westport commissioned by the Town Council, pioneers in the use of such 3D digital technology for both urban planning and online tourism.

Each student (or team of two) can choose a section of the town to work with. Their design brief is purposely rather loose so they can take full advantage of the Sketch-Up software, whilst enabling them to make the maximum use of their imagination.

As with last year’s competition one of the primary sponsors will be FORUM8 the Japanese 3D Virtual Reality software house.

The Prizes this year are:

First Team Prize = 500 Euro

Second Team Prize = 300 Euro

Third Team Prize = 200 Euro

Plus there will be additional prizes subject to additional sponsorship…
